Why Sporks Exist

The origins of sporks actually can be traced back to the original Star Trek series.
In Star Trek, there was a character named Spork who was a Wookie.

Captain Kirk needed a pilot to drive him into space, and so he stopped at a bar and found Spork, a famous space pirate Wookie. Captain Kirk went over to him and sat down and asked him if he would drive him around in the Star Ship Enterprise, which was a kind of rent –a-ship. This is also where Enterprise Rent-A-Cars comes from.

For some reason Spork tried to shoot Captain Kirk, but he missed, and that’s when Spork knew that his destiny lie with Kirk, because Spork never misses.

So they began to go on space adventures together. In one episode entitled, The Troubled Lives of Triplet Tribbles, we go to Sporks home planet of Tatooine, where we find out that Tribbles are baby Wookies.

In Wookie/Tribble society, triplets are considered bad luck, and so they are usually killed. Spork received a distress call from his brother in law, Sasquatch.

Sasquatch informed him that his wife had Triplet Tribbles and that the Wookie Counsel was planning on killing their babies. They wanted help escaping from Tatooine, so that’s why the Enterprise Rent-a-Ship is diverted from its current mission to fly to Tatooine.

When Spork and Kirk get to Tatooine they ask to speak to the Wookie Counsel. They explain that all they want to do is have permission to take Sasquatch, and his wife Jen, and bring them to a more tolerant planet, Vulcan. The counsel says, if you can show us something we have never seen before, we will let you leave with the Triplets. Well, it just so happens that Spork had been working on a prototype for a new weapon, one that would allow you to impale your enemies and then scoop out their brains.

Wookies always eat the brains of those who they defeat. Anyway, he presents this new weapon to the Counsel, and they are so impressed they agree to take it in exchange for the Triplets. They decide to name the weapon a spork after its creator.

To capitalize on the success of the series, the creators released a line of toys. One of the Wookie toys came with a miniature “spork.” Quickly people realized that they could be used for eating applications. Eventually they began to be mass produced as a utensil, and that is all most people know of sporks nowadays.

That is why sporks exist.
